Forewarned is forearmed, as the old saying goes. Well, that old maxim holds true for South Florida motorists too. Boynton Beach in Palm Beach County and Pembroke Pines in Broward County have both voted to re-start their red-light camera programs.  Pembroke Pines is one of five Broward Counties (along with Davie, Sunrise, Tamarac, and West Park) to use the camera program. Boynton Beach will be only one of 39 municipalities in Palm Beach County still using the system. Interestingly, they were also the last county in Palm Beach to end their red-light camera program at the end of last year.  There are currently 16 municipalities in Miami-Dade that still operate a red-light camera program.

Pembroke Pines resident Tony Velazquez was quoted in the Sun-Sentinel regarding the red-light camera ticket program. “It’s more of a revenue generator than anything. I’ve never heard of the police using the cameras to solve other crimes.” This perception that red-light camera programs are more about making money for municipalities than public safety is a widely-held conviction that has strong support among South Florida citizens in all three Southeast Florida counties (and Monroe County too!)
